User feedback on the new Open Geography Portal

Overview

The ONS Open Geography Portal is a public facing platform to allow geographers and statisticians to find and use ONS Geography data.

The ONS Geography team are currently developing a new Open Geography Portal with the aim of improving usability, accessibility and discovery. We are now seeking views about which products to prioritise for upload to the new portal.

Our progress to date:

  • Between January to April 2026, we began building the new Open Geography Portal following a user survey in December 2025
  • We launched the new Open Geography Portal in Alpha in May 2026
  • Usability testing of the new portal was completed in June 2026
  • Throughout July 2026, we implemented changes to the new portal based on the recommendations provided during usability testing

As a result of this progress, we’re now ready to begin migrating data to the new portal. For this, we are seeking views from our customers about which products to prioritise for migration. This is because we have many unique datasets, and their versions, to bring over to the new Open Geography Portal.

Whilst this survey is open to all, we are primarily seeking views from the following sectors:

  • Local Government
  • Academia and research
  • Charities and civil society organisations
  • Emergency services
  • Government Statistical Service
  • Office for National Statistics staff

If you have any questions regarding the content of this survey, please contact ONS.Geography@ons.gov.uk
